There was a Lookout Point at Oamaru which had the best view of the city. I decided to go and visit the Lookout Point while I was in Oamaru. It had a signpost showing the directions and distances of all the major cities in the world.
Oamaru From the Lookout Point: Views of the City and Harbor From Afar
There was a big cannon in the middle of the green lawn at the Lookout Point. It was pointing out towards the sea.
The water was so clear and blue. There were forests full of coniferous trees on one side and the Lookout Point had many information boards for the visitors to read.
There was also a board for the South Hill Walk which showed the directions of several important places in Oamaru. I could see that the historic Harbour Street was a 30 minute walk from the Lookout Point and the Gun Emplacement was 25 minutes away.
I could also see the Oamaru Harbour Breakwater and how it jutted out into the sea. I knew that the breakwater had a very interesting history and had been built to reduce the number of wrecks.
There were small ships and yachts out on the water.
I could even see the parking lot for the wharf and breakwater. All the cars looked really tiny.
On the other side was the actual city of Oamaru. The whole city was visible from the Lookout Point. I could also see the waves breaking against the beaches.
I looked in the direction of the wharf. There were hundreds of little penguins standing on the wharf (you can read my post about the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony to know more about them).
The sun was shining on the water and the water was glittering. I managed to get a picture of the whole harbor and the city of Oamaru as well.
I could even see the trees growing on the sides of the roads and all the cars that were parked in the parking lots. The hills behind Oamaru were also visible.
I thought it was very interesting that the signposts showed the amount of time it would take to walk from the Lookout Point to the other tourist spots.
Another signboard about the Oamaru Lookout Point told me a little bit about the history and geography of the area. There were sections on Boatman’s Harbour and the Victorian Precinct. I also read about Duntroon, which was 45km from Oamaru.
There were three well-known walkways in Oamaru. These were the Skyline Walkway, the South Hill Walkway and the Harbourside Walkway.
I decided to take some pictures of the cannon from up close. It was really huge!
There was a coat of arms on the cannon. It was inscribed into the metal and I could see a crown and a ribbon and some words carved into a circle. The words were French and meant, “Evil be to him who thinks evil.”
I took a few zoomed up shots of the harbor and the fishing boats that were standing there. I could even see the huge fishing nets on the boats. The water looked really pretty.
Some of the boats were quite big and some of them were quite small.
I could see a motorboat going past the wharf. The famous Oamaru blue penguins (perhaps) were everywhere.
The zoomed pictures could even show the humans and visitors walking around near the harbour. They looked absolutely tiny. They were walking around the cars in the parking lot.
Finally, I took one last picture of the hills and countryside around Oamaru. I could see empty green fields and forests behind the city. There were some big houses and buildings in the center of the city and then rural land behind them. It was a lovely sight.
