Cardrona Bra Fence in Bradrona: A Very Unique Place Which Is Only in New Zealand
One of the most unique and funny places that I saw in New Zealand was Bradrona. The Cardrona Bra Fence, which is popularly called Bradrona, is in the Cardrona Valley. I passed some quad bikes on the way to the fence.
The fence was just covered with bras that people had left behind there. I had read that people had begun to attach bras to the fence sometime between 1998 and 1999. It had started with four bras that had been attached to the fence. Nobody knew why those four bras had been attached. But the story began to spread and people started to visit just to hang bras on the rural fence. By now there were hundreds of bras draped over the fence.
The Cardrona Bra Fence was now being used for a good cause. There was a large pink sign hanging from the fence. It said, “Welcome to Bradrona. Thanks for visiting our beautiful valley. While you are here enjoying the lovely scenery, please take a moment to kindly contribute to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. 100% of your contributions will be donated to the NZBCF.” There was also a link for a Facebook page and a QR code.
There were pillars with QR codes that visitors could scan and make online donations. The sign and the first donation had been provided by the Cardrona Distillery. It was located nearby. There was even a collection box where people could put cash.
The bras extended for many meters on either side of the donations sign. The beautiful valley and hills could be seen behind the fence. The grass was very green. Clouds were filling the sky.
I decided to take some pictures of the Cardrona Bra Fence. There were bras of all colors and sizes.
There was also the sculpture of a woman at Bradrona. It was a sculpture of the torso of a woman. She didn’t have a head or any legs. But the upper half of her body and her arms were clearly visible.
The sculpture looked like it was made of marble. The statue was positioned on a thick marble base. It looked very heavy.
I wanted to take some pictures of the Cardrona Bra Fence from the front since I had never seen anything like this.
It was a unique memory from my New Zealand trip (just like my visit to the Buggy Robot Gallery in Oamaru).
Some buildings and sheds were visible behind the fence. But it was a rural area and there weren’t many people or cars around.
Not even many tourists were there when I visited. I had the whole place to myself and I could take as much time as I wanted. I had read that the bra fence was quite controversial.
Some of the local people accepted the fence. But some of the locals thought it was an eyesore and that it was distracting to drivers. People had tried to remove the bras many times.
I thought the story of Bradrona was very interesting. I was glad that a charity had got involved with the Cardrona Bra Fence and that they were now raising money.
