Dim Dou Duk: My Favourite Place for Dim Sum (Hong Kong Style)

Dim Dou Duk: My Favourite Place for Dim Sum (Hong Kong Style)

As someone who enjoys Hong Kong style cuisine I have to say, I don’t think anybody does it better than Dim Dou Duk (but if you’re into Japanese cuisine, you can also try King Japanese Yakiniku here in Chongqing). I recently had the opportunity to dine here and let me tell you, the meal was one of the best I’ve had so far. The branch I was in is in Chongqing in the Longfor Times Paradise Walk (Longhu Tianje) mall.

Dim Dou Duk: Enjoy Hong Kong Style Cuisine in Chongqing

Dim Dou Duk entrance

The store wasn’t busy when we got there but I’ve read that it is very popular among the locals (just like the Hongyadong Folk Custom Scene Area). In fact, it’s said that there would be lines here during the holidays. It’s not shown but to the left of the entrance is a stall that hands out numbered tickets for people who wait in line.

early for lunch service

I think we were rather early for lunch service as there weren’t that many people here yet. Thanks to this, we were seated rather quickly and I proceeded to order through their digital menu (more on this later). As for the ambiance, it felt rather welcoming and my seat was quite comfortable to sit on.

Our orders

Our orders didn’t take long to arrive and it was still quite warm when we got to opening some of the bowls. Maybe it was because it still wasn’t busy but I was pleasantly surprised at how timely the service here was.

Enoki Mushroom Roll with Tofu Skin Braised in Abalone

So the first order is this Enoki Mushroom Roll with Tofu Skin Braised in Abalone Sauce. Yes, the name of the dish is a mouthful and it also happened to have a taste that lingered in my mouth for the duration of my meal here. The mushroom and the abalone sauce in this dish gave it flavor and tastiness while the bean curd added texture. This specific order cost around CNY34.

Fig, Lean Pork, and Snow Pear Soup

This next order is a Fig, Lean Pork, and Snow Pear Soup that’s apparently popular in Cantonese and Hong Kong style cuisine. Much like the previous order, this dish cost CNY34. What stood out to me was its delicate flavor which honestly made it such a great palate cleanser.

Xiao Long Bao

And since this is a dim sum restaurant (here in Chongqing, you’ll find many of these in Bayi Food Street and Guanyin Bridge Food Street), I just had to get an order of Xiao Long Bao as well. This was the Soup-filled Ginger Xiao Long Bao and it tasted as good as it looked. More importantly, this only cost around CNY30 so it was pretty worth it if you ask me.

Banquet in Ba Kingdom Royal Feast

Another dim sum mainstay that I’d definitely recommend ordering is Shiu Mai. For this meal, I ended up ordering the restaurant’s Signature Shiu Mai and was blown away by how tasty it ended up being. You can actually tell that they didn’t skimp with the ingredients here especially with that whole shrimp on top of each one. For CNY34, this was also another dish that I thought was worth ordering.

Smashed Cucumber with Sichuan Peppercorn and garnished with Cilantro

To make the meal more varied, I also decided to order some vegetable dishes. For CNY24, I got an order of Smashed Cucumber with Sichuan Peppercorn and garnished with Cilantro. Now while I do eat veggies, I’m really not a big fan of them. This dish though is something else entirely. The combination of tasty, crunchy, and the numbing sensation from the sichuan peppercorns made this a really interesting palate cleanser.

Salt-boiled lettuce

Another veggie dish that I ordered for that meal was this Salt-boiled lettuce that cost CNY34. This was advertised as a dish that you took if you wanted to enjoy a lifetime of wealth. I’m not really sure whether that’s true or not. I will say this though, this was quite tasty. The lettuce was blanched just right so it wasn’t soggy and still had some crunch to it.

Shunde Fish Congee

And then to round out the meal, I ordered a Shunde Fish Congee. This was a really satisfying bowl that was somehow refreshing yet still tasty. Much like a lot of the other orders, this cost CNY34.

Menu

Dim Dou Duk's digital menu

During our meal, I decided to check out Dim Dou Duk’s digital menu again. This was pretty nice as it already had our table information like table number and the number of people eating (for this meal, our table number was 358 with two diners).

As for this page of the menu, it features dishes that make use of luan xi. This is a type of rice cake made from glutinous rice flour and with a green coloring coming from Chinese tallow tree leaves. One of the dishes featured is a fresh mushroom stuffed in luan xi to form a dumpling.

Luan Xi Red Bean Cake

The other luan xi based dish is this Luan Xi Red Bean Cake that is also priced at CNY24 per serving. Other than this dish, the page also features a Pink Tomato Beef Cheese Tart for CNY24. I was honestly curious about this but ended up not getting it as I’d already ended up ordering quite a handful already.

Fresh Papaya Stewed with Sea Coconut Soup

Another dessert item that I wanted to try but held off on getting was this Fresh Papaya Stewed with Sea Coconut Soup. I enjoy eating papaya (either fresh or in salads) but I’ve never eaten it as a main ingredient of a soup. Anyway an order of this cost around CNY30. If you’re feeling adventurous then the next featured item on this page should pique your interest. For CNY30, you can get yourself an order of Fermented Tofu Steamed Beef Tripe. It actually says on the description under its name that a bite of this dish is fragrant to the soul.

Steamed Red Rice Roll

The first item on this page is also another interesting dish that was actually created just recently in 2006. This Steamed Red Rice Roll is made with red rice flour with a shrimp filling. A serving of this dim sum dish costs around CNY40. If you want something more traditional, the Signature Shrimp Dumplings is also available with a price per serving of CNY34.

other traditional dim sum dishes

Some of the other traditional dim sum dishes that were available when I was there were Char Siu Bao or Honey BBQ Pork Buns and Steamed Chicken Feet with Honey Sauce. These dishes are priced at CNY30 and CNY34 respectively.

Liwan Traditional Boat Congee

I’m not going to lie, this Liwan Traditional Boat Congee was actually one of the dishes that I was contemplating on ordering just because of how tasty it looked. The Steamed Ribs in Special Sauce also looked especially tempting. Both of these dishes were priced at just CNY34 per order.

Youtiao

Youtiao or Deep Fried Dough Sticks are actually some of the best value street food you’ll get in China. That said, its CNY11 price here at the restaurant might be a little steep. For real value for money, I think the Shium Mai might be the best deal here at CNY34 per order. As I said earlier, this was tasty, juicy, and very much worth what I paid for it.

Crispy Egg Tart

Another dessert that you’re probably going to enjoy chowing down is the Crispy Egg Tart. This dish costs CNY30 for an order of this fluffy and bouncy dessert. Speaking of bouncy, the Coconut Mango Jelly is another dish that perfectly fits this description. It’s one of those dishes that can make you feel full just by looking at it. It is a bit costlier than the egg tart though at CNY34 per order.

Original Coconut Stewed Silkie Chicken Soup

I’m not really sure but for some reason there was only one order left of the Original Coconut Stewed Silkie Chicken Soup. For those not familiar with Silkie Chicken, it’s also called black-boned chicken and it’s considered a delicacy in Chinese cuisine (if you’re looking for this in this city, you can go to Ciqikou Ancient Town where there are lots of local restaurants offering local cuisine). This is one of the costlier dishes here at CNY40. Another CNY40 delicacy offered here sis the Braised Beef Tripe with Honey Sauce Chicken Feet.

The Twenty Select Items

As you may have noticed, this section of the menu is where most of the meat dishes are and is called ‘The Twenty Select Items’. The first item on the image above is the entry for Lemon Flavored Beef Balls which is priced at CNY34 per order. It is advertised as being super refreshing likely thanks to the lemon and cilantro used for its ingredients. Another mainstay of dim sum restaurants, the Black Pepper Beef Ribs here cost CNY40. According to the description, the restaurant says that the short ribs used for the dish are all carefully selected to ensure the best flavor.

Steamed Ox Tripe with Satay Sauce

Steamed Ox Tripe with Satay Sauce is a Malay-inspired dish that might be worth checking out. Much like most of the dishes that feature tripe, it’s priced at CNY40 per serving. Those looking for something more affordable without compromising on the flavor, the Chaozhu Steamed Dumplings for CNY24 for an order seems like a good deal.

section has entries for Lucky Cream Custard Bun

This section has entries for Lucky Cream Custard Bun and the Soup-Filled Ginger Xiao Long Bao I ordered. An order of the custard bun is priced at CNY34 while the xiao long bao is CNY30 per serving (4 xiao long bao per serving).

entries for two of my other orders

Here are the entries for two of my other orders. The Enoki Mushroom with Tofu Skin Braised in Abalone sauce has a really rich and flavorful taste that’s also relatively affordable at CNY34. I wasn’t able to take a picture of the Century Egg and Lean Meat Congee but it was also quite tasty and filling. More importantly, it was relatively cheaper at just CNY30 per order.

Cantonese Won Ton Soup Noodles

What’s a Chinese restaurant without noodles? Still part of the Twenty Select Items, the Cantonese Won Ton Soup Noodles shown here is CNY30 and it honestly looks rather tasty and the serving seems like it’s relatively large. Another noodle dish is the Fried Noodles with Three Shredded Ingredients. This also costs CNY30 for one order which looks like it could be shared for two.

some nice palate cleansers

Need something to cleanse your palate, here are some nice palate cleansers still from the Twenty Select Items section. First on the list is Pan-fried Radish Cakes priced at CNY24. The Water Chestnut Cake with Cane Juice Syrup also looks sumptuous and at CNY24 per serving, could be a great addition to your meal.

Steamed Rice Rolls

Now you might be wondering why a Steamed Rice Rolls with Beef dish is on here. Well, this CNY34 dish has coriander which balances out the beef’s rich and savory flavor. If you want something healthy yet still flavorful then a Cold-tossed Salad with Crispy Black Fungus for CNY24 just might be right up your alley.

entry for the CNY34 Salt-boiled Lettuce

This is the entry for the CNY34 Salt-boiled Lettuce I ordered earlier. Again, this was a refreshing dish that really complemented the other meals that I got while also serving as a palate cleanser. While it is a meat dish, the Braised Squab is actually quite healthy as it’s leaner and relatively easier to digest than chicken or duck. This particular entry is listed at CNY38 per serving.

Charcoal-baked Char Siu Pastry

Another interesting dish that I wish I also ordered (in hindsight) was this Charcoal-baked Char Siu Pastry that is priced at CNY34. The Pan-fried Leek Dumplings also seemed like a great choice for CNY30 but getting this would have meant dropping either the Xiao Long Bao or the Shiu Mai.

Fried Pan-fried section of the menu

Now we’re already at the Fried/Pan-fried section of the menu. For the first item, I wasn’t too keen on the Flowing Heart Milky Fragrant Crispy Roll though it did look kind of interesting. If you want to try it, the dish is only CNY34. The restaurant also offered Chicken Spring Rolls for CNY30 per serving. If you’ve yet to try spring rolls then I highly recommend getting these.

Xian Shuji Jiao

These cute chick-like fried dumplings are called Xian Shuji Jiao and are also mainstays at Hong Kong style dim sum restaurants. Typically, this fried dumpling’s filling has minced pork, chives, jicama, mushrooms, and dried shrimp. Here at Dim Dou Duk, a serving is CNY30. Below the fried dumplings is a fried bun containing roast goose. This is priced competitively at just CNY24.

chive pancakes

I absolutely enjoy chive pancakes but like with a lot of items on this menu, I just didn’t think I could fit another order in my stomach. At CNY34 for an order, I’m guessing you might be able to fit this in your budget. The other item here is a Crispy Skinned Dace Fish Cake that is also priced at CNY34 per order.

not usually found in traditional dim sum places

Now here are a couple of dishes that’s not usually found in traditional dim sum places. The first image in the picture is a Napoleon Tart that goes for CNY11 for a single piece. Underneath it is Coconut Flavored Fragrant Crispy Nian Gao. Nian Gao is a glutinous rice cake and this one is advertised as being coconut flavored and fried until it has a crispy exterior. An order of this will set you back CNY30.

something sweet and exotic

If you happen to be looking for something sweet and exotic, the restaurant also offers Durian Pastries. An order of four will cost you just CNY34. To balance the sweetness, you could also get some Golden Fried Tofu which goes for CNY30 per order.

Garlic Roasted Crispy Chicken

Priced at CNY58 per order, I think this Garlic Roasted Crispy Chicken was the second most expensive item offered by the restaurant (By the way, if you want to taste the best roasted duck here in Chongqing I suggest you go to Shouchailu Roasted Duck Restaurant.). That said, I think this still would have been worth it especially if there were 2 or more people in your group. As for the most expensive dish, that distinction goes to the Authentic Shijing Roasted Goose that costs CNY88 per order.

Wasabi Fried Shrimp Balls

Still in the Fried and Baked section is another non-traditional dish called Wasabi Fried Shrimp Balls. This goes for CNY40 per serving and since it has wasabi, it’s probably going to be a little spicy. If you want something more fresh yet still tasty, then the next section has a dish called Colorful Dace Fish Balls with Cilantro. The dish is priced at just CNY30 though admittedly it doesn’t look that good compared to the other dishes we’ve seen so far.

Pearl Glutinous Rice Chicken

The next item in this section is Pearl Glutinous Rice Chicken which is presented as if it were a burrito. A serving of this is priced at CNY34. Under this is what looks like steamed mantou and hilariously enough Google actually translates it to carrot juice nutrition pack for some reason. Anyway, this costs CNY11 per order.

Chicken Soup Four Color Dumplings

This picture of the Chicken Soup Four Color Dumplings was honestly one of the most beautiful looking that I’d seen (out of all the other menu items here that is). Moreover, it also has a really unique presentation. If you want to get an order of this dish, it’s going to cost you CNY40. The other item here that you might want to check out is the Black Pepper Steamed Large Intestines that goes for CNY34 for a single order.

Chicken Oil Malay Sponge Cake

Want to change things up? The Chicken Oil Malay Sponge Cake or Ma Lai Gao at CNY30 just might be what your meal needs. Another cake available here at Dim Dou Duk is Pak Thong Koh or Nostalgic White Sugar Cake. Like the Ma Lai Gao, an order of this cake is priced at CNY30.

Steamed Chicken Feet and Ribs Over Rice

If you want a savory complete meal with melt in your mouth goodness then get the Steamed Chicken Feet and Ribs Over Rice for CNY38. If it’s anything like our orders, this dish should be good for sharing with one or two other diners. Speaking of dishes that are good for sharing, the next item is also great for two or more diners. Soy Sauce Clay Pot Rice Noodle Rolls are mainstays of Hong Kong Style cuisine and here it is priced at CNY36 for a moderately sized order..

Leek and Braised Pig Blood Curd

Now I understand that Western cuisine isn’t really fond of dishes that make use of animal blood. I will say though, they’re missing out on some really nice flavor. If you haven’t tried it yet then make sure to get a taste of the Leek and Braised Pig Blood Curd for CNY24. Not feeling adventurous with your food? That’s okay. There’s also Stir-Fried Sticky Rice for CNY34.

Porridge, Noodles, and Rice section

Now we’re in the Porridge, Noodles, and Rice section of the menu. The first item here is the ever popular Beef Chow Fun. An order of this Cantonese favorite will set you back just CNY40. The next dish is Wontons in Vintage Vinegar Sauce. Also a staple of dim sum houses, an order of this dish costs CNY36.

Shunde Fish Congee on menu

The first item in the image is the Shunde Fish Congee that I pictured near the beginning of this article. This order cost me CNY34 and I will say it was actually worth every penny. If you just want plain congee then you can order one that’s been cooked in an open flame. From what I’ve read, this method of cooking actually imparts a distinct flavor to the congee. In terms of pricing, this congee costs CNY11.

Millet Pumpkin Porridge

Millet Pumpkin Porridge is another popular comfort food you can eat at any meal. If you want to include this in your order, expect to shell out CNY24. Prepping for an exam and want to score high? Apparently Champion Congee can help you with this for CNY30 an order. It’s said that the guy who came up with this congee (which features pork kidney, liver, and intestines) attributed his academic success to its inclusion in his diet. Regardless if you’ll be successful academically or not, you can expect this to be a really filling and savory meal.

Chopped Vegetables and Sausage

I’m not quite sure what the first item is. Initially my translation app said that this was Chopped Vegetables and Sausage. What I can be sure of though, is that it is priced at CNY30 for an order. The next dish listed after the Chopped Vegetables and Sausage is Hong Kong-style Mixed Sauce Steamed Rice Roll. Again, another mouthful of a name that also looks like it wants to get into my mouth! Kidding aside, an order of this dish will cost you CNY30.

Cantonese Wonton Soup

Cantonese Wonton Soup is another dim sum mainstay that you might be interested in at just CNY30. In case you want more protein in your diet then there’s also a Steamed Ribs and Preserved Meat Over Rice meal that will set you back just CNY40.

Rice with Preserved Mustard Greens and Pork Patty

Now this next dish is actually quite interesting. It’s kind of like a Salisbury steak but without the gravy (and so much more tastier). Called Steamed Rice with Preserved Mustard Greens and Pork Patty, the dish is available for CNY34 an order. Listed below this is a dish called Braised Beef Offal and Radish Casserole. Unlike the dish it preceded, this one is a little more expensive at CNY40.

Rich Soup section

Now we’re at the Rich Soup (not gonna lie, I might have butchered this translation) section. There are actually only two items here and the first one is called a Young Tangerine and Meat Juice Soup. What’s interesting about this particular soup is that it’s actually very limited. At the time of taking this picture, there were only 6 orders left with each order costing CNY34. The other soup is of course what I went with. The Fig, Lean Pork, and Snow Pear Soup that I got also cost CNY34 for a single order.

Side Dishes section

Perhaps there’s no better representative of the Side Dishes section than the first dish listed here. Soy Sauce Braised Chicken Feet is a delicacy that I welcome people to really try. This one is not only flavorful but also fragrant and in my opinion is a great partner for any beer or hard drink. It’s not just Cantonese food that’s available here as you can also order this Sichuan dish called Spicy and Numbing Honeycomb Tripe Strips. At CNY40, this should also go well with alcohol.

Cold Tossed Fish Skin or Fish Skin Salad

If you want something crunchy and tasty then there’s a Cold Tossed Fish Skin or Fish Skin Salad that costs CNY34. Since I already ordered a good amount of protein, I decided to just get the Sichuan Pepper Smashed Cucumber for CNY24. This was tasty, crunchy, and unsurprisingly numbing thanks to the Sichuan peppercorns.

Vinegared Jellyfish

Rounding out the Side Dish section is another interesting dish that I think is worth trying at least once. Vinegared Jellyfish is essentially a salad of jellyfish tentacles dressed with aged vinegar and it definitely makes for a unique dining experience. It’s available for CNY40 per order. With the Side Dish section done, we’re now at the Dessert section and the first dish listed here is a popular Hong Kong dish called Mango Pomelo Sago. Its listed price per order is CNY34.

Lotus Seed Red Bean Soup

Of course since this is a dim sum restaurant, it’s definitely expected to serve a dessert as popular as Lotus Seed Red Bean Soup. There are two entries for the soup here on the menu and both are priced the same at CNY24 per order. The listing at the top is for the cold version of the soup while below it is for the hot one.

Sweet Soy Milk

Rounding out the Dessert section is the listing for Sweet Soy Milk which is going for just CNY11 a cup. Once you’ve ordered your preferred dessert, you’re likely going to want to balance the sweets with some healthy green leafy veggies. The first item at this section is a vegetable dish that’s in some kind of broth and costs CNY34 an order.

Fish Curd Soup with Spring Vegetables

The next listed dish in the Veggie section is roughly translated as Fish Curd Soup with Spring Vegetables. Much like the other veggie dish, an order of this is priced at CNY34. With that, we’re now at the Drinks section and the first and only item here was what I ordered for our table. If you’re wondering what it is, it’s just lemon tea that costs CNY18.

plain rice

This section with an entry of only the restaurant’s signage is for the number of diners on the table. The next section is just for plain rice which you can order for CNY3 a cup.

Souvenir Snack section

Finally, we’re at the Souvenir Snack section of the menu. Items here are great if you have loved ones back home. The first souvenir item here is a Seaweed Egg Roll in a box that costs CNY45. Other than the seaweed egg roll, there’s also Monk Fruit Tea that costs CNY49.9 for a 50g package.

Monk Fruit Tea

It’s not just Monk Fruit Tea that’s available in this section though. The restaurant also offers Lychee Black Tea, Chrysanthemum and Cassia Seed Tea blend, and Corn Silk Tea. The Lychee Black Tea is a little more expensive at CNY49.9 per 50g package while the other two both have CNY19.9 price tags.

other tea flavors

Rounding the tea flavors is the Sugarcane, Imperata Cylindrica Root, and Snow Pear Tea blend that is also priced at CNY19.9 per package. If you want to level up your food then definitely check out the Garlic Chili Sauce offered here for just CNY14.9 for a small bottle. As for those who ended up getting the tea packages, this souvenir Chicken Cup Tea Set for CNY188 could have the perfect vessels for your purchase/s.

Chicken Cup Tea Set tea tray

On this page is a Chicken Cup Tea Set tea tray that’s much more expensive at CNY219. Looking for a stylish canvas bag? Look no further than this section that features two really nice designs for just CNY19.9 each. The top canvas bag prominently shows a Stone Lion design in black and green colorways. As for the lower bag, it shows the same design just with a red and light blue color scheme.

Piineapple Cake

If you remember, earlier I showed you the Chicken Cup Tea Set and the tea tray. Well, it turns out, you can actually buy both as a larger set for a much cheaper 399 (as opposed to when you buy them separately. For consumable souvenirs, there’s this Piineapple Cake that’s worth CNY45.6 and a bottle of Dim Dou Duk branded water for CNY3.

jerkies

Perhaps the consumables that I’d most recommend are these jerkies. The top most is a Pork Jerky that is advertised as Charcoal Grilled. Next would then be another pork jerky but this time, one that’s Black Pepper Flavored. Now if you happen to not be a fan of pork jerky then you might enjoy the jerkied Original Flavor Dace with Salted Black Beans. The pork jeries on this page each cost CNY17.5 while the Dace is little more expensive at CNY25.

spicy version of the Dace Fish jerky

Completing the jerky flavors is a spicy version of the Dace Fish jerky that also is priced at CNY25 (like the Original Flavor version). Now if you want souvenirs that are a little sweeter but would still keep for some time then get the Walnut Cookie or the Seaweed Peanut Sachima for CNY35 and CNY19.9 respectively.

premium teas

Here are the premium teas that are available for purchase here at Dim Dou Duk. The top most is a Charcoal Roasted Tieguanyin Tea (a kind of oolong tea from Anxi County) which costs CNY208. At a similar price point, you can also get a Honey Osmanthus flavored and scented Fenghuang Dancong Tea. Now if you thought these two are expensive then you haven’t seen the third tea brand yet. The Yingde Black Tea Gift Box costs CNY252 which, as its name implies, has black tea from the Yingde region in Guangdong.

plushies

Would you look at these plushies! The plush toy that looks like he’s about to throw down at the top of this image is apparently called Red Rice Sausage King. Under him, is a mascot called Shrimp Dumpling King. Finally, the bottom most plush toy is called BBQ Pork Bun King and he seems like he’s having the time of his life. Anyway, these plushies are all priced at a reasonable (in my opinion) CNY28.

box of nougat biscuits and a box of handmade mochi glutinous rice cake

Finally, the last two items in this menu are this CNY32 box of nougat biscuits and a CNY29.9 box of handmade mochi/glutinous rice cake.

With that, I end my enjoyable and filling dining experience here at Dim Dou Duk (and after this, I got back to The Humble River View Hotel). The restaurant’s service was actually quite timely and I love how detailed the menu is. Like it’s probably one of the few restaurants I’ve come across that discloses the presence of cilantro in their food. For those unfamiliar with this plant, there is a percentage of the world population that will taste soap after eating it. The restaurant disclosing this means they’re being proactive.
