I’ve had plenty of memorable meals in Chongqing (like the Banquet in Ba Kingdom and Miao Long Table Banquet just to name a few) but arguably one of my favorites was the one I had at Shouchailu Roasted Duck Restaurant. It was perhaps one of the most succulent and flavorful roast ducks that I’ve had in recent memory which was surprising since I had really low expectations going into the restaurant. Not only was the food great, I also thought the ambiance was exceptional.
The Shouchailu Roast Duck Restaurant in Chongqing: Serving One of the Most Succulent and Flavorful Roast Ducks in the City
I was so used to eating out with plenty of people around that I was kind of taken aback (in a good way) by how silent and relaxing it was here. Service was also top notch as I immediately had one of the wait staff come over to take my order. There was a bit of a language barrier but the menu had pretty clear pictures so I still ended up getting the order that I wanted.
Now speaking of my order, this was how it arrived on our table. I kid you not, I was probably drooling as this was laid down. I mean, just looking at this now as I’m writing about (and reminiscing) my dining experience has made me hungry. By no means was this the best roasted duck I’ve ever had but I’d be lying if I said that it wasn’t delicious.
Aside from the roasted duck, our table was also given some sliced raw vegetables as well as chun bing and the restaurant’s special roasted duck sauce (which I think is just your typical sour plum sauce). I’m not a big fan of veggies but the ones that I got were actually quite nice and complemented the duck and sauce with their crunchy texture and neutral flavor.
Here’s another look at the interior of Shochailu Roasted Duck Restaurant. Again, I couldn’t help but notice just how laid back the restaurant was. Maybe it was the time of day or perhaps I was just lucky that there weren’t that many people during my visit. That said, I think I prefer this kind of ambiance more as I really love to ruminate while eating food that I like.

Aside from the chun bing and sliced raw vegetables, another side dish that was served along with the roast duck was this blanched choy sum in oyster sauce. This honestly complemented the rich flavor of the duck rather nicely with its own slightly bitter and earthy flavor.
On top of the roasted duck, I also decided to get an order of steamed fish which was also surprisingly tasty. Seriously, the fish not only tasted good, it also smelled really nice thanks to the spring onions, ginger, and sesame oil they used. In fact, this dish was probably the one that I ended up remembering the most just because of how aromatic it was.

I’m not sure what fish was used for this dish but I will say that it was prepared really well. There wasn’t any fishy smell or aftertaste and the white meat was actually quite tender. The belly portion in particular was to die for and I still remember how it melted instantly in my mouth.
Overall, I think my dining experience at Shochailu Roast Duck Restaurant was worth it. Do I think you should make it a priority when you visit Chongqing? To be honest, I’m not too sure (or you can also try King Japanese Yakiniku here in Chongqing if you’re also into Japanese cuisine). If you’re close to an outlet though (or if you have the time on your itinerary to go to one) then I’d definitely recommend trying out the roast duck. Otherwise, you might be better off going to a restaurant closer to where you’re staying.
