Westin Chongqing Liberation Square Hotel: My Review

Westin Chongqing Liberation Square Hotel My Review

Aside from Humble River View Hotel, Ashan River View Hotel, and Ascott Raffles City, I also managed to stay for a couple of days at The Westin Chongqing Liberation Square. Out of the hotels that I’ve written about so far, this one was probably one of the most premium.

It had pretty much everything and the customer service was superb. If you want to know more about my stay then make sure to read through the end as I go through the hotel’s best features from its lobby up to the details of the room that I managed to book.

Much like Ascott Raffles City, this hotel is also in the Yuzhong District. As its name implies though, The Westin Chongqing Liberation Square Hotel can be found much closer to the Liberation (Jiefangbei) Square. Due to this, it’s probably one of the best hotels to be in as Jiefangbei is sort of a central hub for accessing other popular locations in Chongqing.

lobby area

It was night time when I reached the hotel so there weren’t that many people checking in. Thanks to this, I was able to thoroughly observe the lobby area and ended up being impressed at just how spacious it was. It seriously felt like I was at an airport lounge waiting to board my flight. The fact that I also got to see Chongqing’s skyline from here only served to reinforce this feeling.

view of the lobby featuring the check-in desks

Here’s a view of the lobby featuring the check-in desks. As you’ve probably noticed, the lighting in this area isn’t as stark as in the previous image. The relaxed lighting was, in my opinion, really nice as it sort of made you feel at ease (coupled with the really comfortable sofa which you can see off in the background). There were also some really intriguing wooden sculptures that were for decorative purposes only.

elevators

After checking in, you can either go up through one of the elevators or you can take the scenic route and pass through these halls and climb up those steps in the background instead. I would personally go up the stairs as I think it’s a lot nicer and the walk gives you a bit of an idea of the kind of amenities you can expect from the hotel (you can also read my article about breakfast at Westin Hotel Chongqing).

plaques on the walls

Walking through the hallway, you’ll also get to see these plaques on the walls. The lower three on the right were given by CTrip (the rightmost) and Bestop. The CTrip award is for the Most Popular Hotel while those from Bestop are acknowledgements of the hotel’s inclusion in the Chongqing Luxury Hotel Rankings as a Top Luxury Hotel.

Westin Chongqing Liberation Square is also what's considered a Green Hotel

On top of being a luxury hotel, Westin Chongqing Liberation Square is also what’s considered a Green Hotel. So I actually looked into what this meant and it’s basically a certification given to hotels that are able to integrate eco-friendly practices such as water and energy conservation as well as waste reduction in their management practices.

wall that had various kinds of tapestry from top to bottom

Going back to the lobby, I came across this wall that had various kinds of tapestry from top to bottom. Now if you read my write up of the Three Gorges Museum, you’d know that Chongqing is known for its traditional Kesi tapestry. Now I’m not sure what kind of tapestry these may be but considering the hotel is in Chongqing, the likelihood of them being of the Kesi variety is quite high.

large hallways

Having stayed at dozens of hotels over the course of my travels, I’ve come to sort of appreciate those with fairly large hallways. As shown in the picture, Westin Chongqing Liberation Square happens to be one of these types of hotels. The hallways here are quite spacious though I personally think the carpets aren’t really that nice.

the elevators here

Here’s a shot of the elevators here. As I said earlier, I typically try to use the stairs when I go into a new hotel just so I can get a better idea of its amenities and facilities. That said, you might want to also use the elevator especially if you decide to carry your own luggage. One thing you might also notice with the picture is the proximity of the room doors to that of the elevators’ own.

mule slippers

After finally getting inside my room, I immediately went ahead and grabbed these mule slippers. These were quite comfortable on the feet and I absolutely enjoyed wearing them inside the room. My only real gripe (if you can even call it that) with it is that it’s in white which means it’s easy to get dirty.

closet area

Now this is the room’s closet area which I think was just the right size. It’s definitely not as spacious compared to what I had in my room at the Ascott Raffles City Chongqing. Don’t be mistaken though. There’s still more than enough room here for two or maybe even three people’s belongings.

closer look at the closet

A closer look at the closet. As you can see, there’s plenty of clothes hangers here in addition to an ironing horse/board and clothes iron. Much like with the other places that I stayed at here in Chongqing, I actually found myself using the iron and ironing board a lot to fix the wrinkles on a lot of my clothes.

closet items

Aside from the clothes iron and ironing board/horse, the closet also had items such as an umbrella, flashlights, and even a shoe brush and a shoe horn. I didn’t find much use for the flashlights as there really weren’t any power outages during the length of my stay.

closer look at the steam iron

Here’s a closer look at the steam iron. It’s made by Philips and I think is one of its EasySpeed models. The steam settings on this were really nice and overall, it was great at ironing out the most stubborn wrinkles on some of the folded clothes that I’d forgotten to take out of the luggage when I was unpacking stuff. More importantly though, this steam iron was just the right size and weight for me.

Fire Escape Hoods

So over the course of my stay here in Chongqing, I noticed that a lot of the hotels that I was in were very big on safety. Westin Chongqing Liberation Square isn’t an exception to this as it also had plenty of safety and security features that were quite uncommon even in the premier/luxury hotels that I’ve stayed in over the years. One of these is the availability of Fire Escape Hoods in every room. In ours, I found two (see picture above) that were easily accessible in the closet’s top shelf.

room's safe

To the right of the closet you’ll find the room’s safe. It’s one of these with a digital lock and I was honestly a little surprised at just how large it was. A lot of the hotels that I’d been to recently also had safes but they were usually far smaller (think the kind suitable for pieces of jewelry). This one? I think you could actually fit in a small bag here without a problem.

laundry bag and a laundry request form

Here’s a laundry bag and a laundry request form if you want housekeeping to do something about your clothes. Basically, all you’ll need to do is to fill out the form and place your clothes inside the bag. Once housekeeping arrives, they’ll pick up your laundry and do the washing and drying for you.

bathroom

And now we’re in (or rather we’re still at the door of) the bathroom. The first thing you’ll notice is this countertop with an elevated sink and a vanity mirror. I was expecting the mirror to actually be bigger like what I had at the Ascott Raffles City serviced apartment that I previously talked about. That said, this still was nice and I’d argue that the lighting here was nicer.

toilet area

The toilet area was just okay. I would have also liked it to have been a little more spacious but I think that it’s still more than wide enough for an average person to comfortably fit inside. Arguably its best feature though is the phone outlet which you can use if you’re unfortunate enough to (for some reason) have run out of toilet paper.

bar which controls the bidet feature of the toilet

Right on top of the toilet paper dispenser is this bar which controls the bidet feature of the toilet. This was actually quite nice as it can cleanse both the front and the rear. Additionally, it allows you to control both the pressure and the position of the stream. This means that you don’t have to move around just so the water hits where you want it to hit.

shower

If you’re looking to shower then you’ll find it just right next to the toilet area. While it more or less has the same dimensions as the toilet, the shower does feature a transparent glass door for a little more privacy.

standard shower head

Inside is a standard shower head which outputs both hot and cold water. It’s honestly rather uninteresting to look at which isn’t really a bad thing. I mean, regardless if it’s a fancy showerhead or not, what’s important is that the hot and cold controls work. Thankfully, I found no issues with this and I rather enjoyed taking baths here.

complimentary shampoo, body wash, and conditioner

As is usually the case with the hotels that I’ve stayed in, the shower had complimentary shampoo, body wash, and conditioner. I’m not sure if there were other fragrances but during my stay, I got White Tea with Aloe. Since I brought my own toiletries though, I kind of had no use for these. That said, if I didn’t bring my own I would have had no issues using these toiletries.

bathtub

If you decide to visit Chongqing, I would highly recommend you get a hotel room that has a bathtub. You’ll be doing a lot of walking here and a dip in a bathtub is one of the best ways to deal with sore feet (and bodies). The bathtub here was actually quite cozy and I might be mistaken, but it seemed like it was also more spacious than the one at the Ascott Raffles City serviced apartment that I talked about previously.

what the bathtub looks like up close

Here’s what the bathtub looks like up close. I immediately knew it was maintained regularly because of how spotlessly clean it was. The fixtures also seemed like they were still new and really the only indication that it wasn’t was the slight discoloration as well as wear and tear on the tile grout. Even then, you really had to look close before you’d notice it.

set of complimentary toiletries

On the countertop you’ll find a small drawer with another set of complimentary toiletries. So aside from a bar of soap, you’ll also get some cotton buds, body lotion, mouthwash, and a shower cap which I ended up using the most. Again, I typically bring my own toiletries in my travels so the rest of these weren’t used that much. Still, the complimentary toiletries are nice to have and if you’re not too fussy then you should definitely use these.

reminder for guests to put their towels on the provided baskets

Here’s a sign with a reminder for guests to put their towels on the provided baskets if they want them replaced. In addition, guests are also encouraged to save water by limiting their use of disposable toiletries. I’m not quite sure if the second reminder is followed by all guests but it’s heartening to see the hotel’s effort in limiting wastage (especially of water).

sign reminding guests to again reduce their use of disposables

Now here’s another sign reminding guests to again reduce their use of disposables. If you happen to have questions regarding this policy, you can actually just use the room’s phone and dial “0” to get in touch with the hotel’s customer support team. I personally didn’t use this but it might prove useful if you do decide to visit.

how the countertop looks up close.

This is how the countertop looks up close. As you can see, it’s actually quite spacious and like I said earlier, the lighting here is actually quite nice. The elevated sink is well lit thanks to the illumination coming from the lights found on both sides of the vanity mirror.

pair of glasses and four bottles of distilled water

Aside from toiletries, the countertop also had a pair of glasses and four bottles of distilled water. Now I just find it funny that the hotel had all these reminders regarding the use of disposable items all while providing these said disposable items for guests to use (in the form of the plastic bottles). Kidding aside, the hotel most probably recycles these so just make sure that you dispose of the plastic bottles properly when you’re done with them.

fridge

So the hotel room does have a fridge but it’s limited to just drinks. Moreover, the drinks here were not free and were also on the pricier side so I ended up just buying from outside. If you’re interested in these, you can actually scan the barcode on the fridge’s door and it’ll show you the list of drinks and their respective prices. If cold drinks aren’t your thing then you can direct your gaze to the right of the fridge for the room’s coffee maker which you can use for either espresso or lungo.

packets of sugar, creamer, and even some stirrers.

If using the coffee maker isn’t your thing but you still want your caffeine fix then you can always just fix yourself a cup or two of instant coffee and/or tea. Aside from the coffee and tea, the hotel also made sure to provide packets of sugar, creamer, and even some stirrers.

wine glasses

Remember the drinks in the fridge earlier? Well, if you decided to get wine from there then you’re going to want to use these wine glasses. There are also regular glasses here for the soft drinks and the beer.

electric kettle

So if you do opt for the instant coffee then you’re going to want to use this electric kettle to heat up your water. There’s really nothing much to this as it’s just your typical electric kettle though if you enjoy coffee as much as I do then you’re going to find yourself using this a lot.

ice bucket

The final item you’ll find in these drawers is this cute ice bucket. While it does have some tongs, it unfortunately doesn’t have ice on it yet. Yes, you’ll have to call in room service for some ice if you plan to pop open a can of Pepsi (or whatever cola is available in the fridge).

the beds

We’ve finally gotten to the beds and boy are these really comfy to sleep in. The beds themselves were just the right firmness and weren’t too soft. Perhaps the only issue I had with these was that the lights here were a little too strong and I had to make sure these were turned off or else I’d never have gotten any sleep.

digital clock, a telephone, and the controls to the lighting

In between the beds is this bedside table which has a digital clock, a telephone, and the controls to the lighting that I was talking about in the previous image. You’ll also notice that there’s an electric outlet here for when you decide to charge your phone or gadgets but don’t want to move over to the living room area.

low profile cabinet

Directly in front of the beds is this low profile cabinet that has these lovely vases on top of it. This is where I stored some of my other bags when the closet started getting a little cramped. One thing I will say about this though is that it probably would’ve been better if the vases weren’t here as I was constantly worried that I might inadvertently knock them over.

office setup

Perhaps one of the features of this room that I appreciated the most was this office setup close to the beds (to your right if you’re facing them). Now I wouldn’t recommend working when you’re on a vacation but if you really can’t avoid making that last minute report then you might as well make the most of this table.

chaise lounge and side table

If you’re facing the beds then you’ll find this chaise lounge and side table to your right. They’re probably the best seats in the room as they’re quite close to the windows which offer a great view of Chongqing’s skyline. And while I don’t recommend it, it’s also possible to sleep on the chaise lounge as it’s quite comfortable to sit in and lay down on.

these signs featuring ads for a spa

Going back to the office table, you’ll find these signs featuring ads for a spa. Take note though that the spa is run by a third party and you’ll need to set a reservation if you want to avail of their services. Other than the spa, there’s also a sign here for in-room dining. Just scan the barcode and you’ll have access to the hotel’s in-room dining menu. Like with other hotels though, the food from here can be a little more expensive so think first before you order.

the office table also has a phone on it

Much like the bedside table earlier, the office table also has a phone on it. Then on the wall beside it is a set of I/O ports for internet as well as for connecting to the room’s entertainment system/TV and even the internet. What’s even more interesting is the inclusion of an RCA connection which is a relic at this point.

good old-fashioned stationery

It’s not just high-tech connections that you’ll find on the table. The hotel also provides you with good old-fashioned stationery to write down your most important ideas and letters. They even included a folder, some paper clips, and even a ruler.

one of the room's trash bins

Under the office table is one of the room’s trash bins. It’s conveniently labeled for both non-biodegradable (on the left) and biodegradable (on the right) items. Housekeeping typically empties this regularly so make sure that you’re not chucking important stuff that you might need in the future here.

control panel for the drapes and sheers

Here’s the control panel for the drapes and sheers. The controls allow you to move the drapes horizontally while the sheers’ movement is limited vertically. This control scheme is pretty intuitive so I don’t think you’ll have any issues using it. Personally, I think more hotels should have this feature as it’s sometimes a pain to manually open and close window coverings.

buttons stuck on the wall

Now I was really confused as to why there were buttons stuck on the wall where the head area of the beds were. As you can probably tell, these don’t have any function other than for decoration. I personally think they kind of add a touch of personality to the room though I’d understand if other people might think the opposite. After a night or two you honestly just kind of forget they’re there.

a bit of Chongqing peeping through the partially opened sheers

Here you can see a bit of Chongqing peeping through the partially opened sheers. I said earlier that the chaise lounge might be the best spot in the room because it affords you a view of the city below. Of course for best viewing, you’re going to want to dim the lights inside.

sample of the kind of views that I got to enjoy from this room

Here’s a sample of the kind of views that I got to enjoy from this room. The specific area in the image is to the east of the building the hotel is in and prominently features both the Dongshuimen Bridge and the Yangtze River that it crosses. If you had a room facing the western direction then you’re likely going to see Hongyadong and the Qiansimen bridge (both of which I’ve written about recently) beside it.

close up view of the Dongshuimen Bridge

I end this review of the Westin Chongqing Liberation Square Hotel with this close up view of the Dongshuimen Bridge. Overall, the hotel’s service and room itself are quite nice. I still think Ascott Raffles City has slightly better amenities but it’s still quite close. Provided budget is not an issue then you really can’t go wrong with either.
