Recently I stayed for a couple of nights at Four Points by Sheraton in Auckland. It ended up being a pretty solid choice. It’s not over the top or fancy, but everything was comfortabley and worked well.
The location, right in the middle of town, made getting around super easy. Here’s what the room was like, what the gym had to offer, and some of the other little details that made this an overall pleasant stay. Four Points is part of the Sheraton family, but it’s positioned as the more practical, no-fuss option.
That’s about all there is here: good service, clean spaces, and a location that actualy makes sense if you’re exploring Auckland.
Why I Liked This Hotel
Four Points by Sheraton Auckland
Located in downtown Auckland, the hotel is on a bustling street, which I appreciated because you can simply walk out the door and find yourself smack dab in the center of things. It was simple enough to head out for the evening or during the day, grab something to eat, and then walk home without having to worry about finding my way through winding backstreets, or feeling unsafe late at night.
Reception was friendly and efficient. No fussing around, just a few minutes to sort things out and check in. The lobby wasn’t stuffy at all; it felt like a relaxed lounge rather than a formal hotel entrance area.
Pale sofas allowed for quiet conversation or laptop work by a few guests I spotted, while planters separated seating spaces into little pockets of privacy. A wall was lined with framed photographs, and I spied some shelves with a few ornaments and books that made the lobby feel even homier then your typical corporate hotel vibe.
The water refill station in the lobby was a nice touch I particularly enjoyed. I topped up my bottle a couple of times instead of purchasing plastic bottles, which saved me a little money and felt good.
It was simple and functional: My room consisted of a small entrance hallway with a wardrobe, followed by a corridor past the bathroom that led to the bedroom itself. It contained a comfy bed, nicely made, and some art over the headboard which gave it a touch more character but nothing that distracted from sleep. The curtains did an adequate job of blocking out the streetlight, so I had no issues getting to sleep.
There was a good-size desk and chair that I used for a little work one night.
When I entered, there were bottles of complimentary water on the desk, which is always a nice touch. A phone was in easy reach on the bedside table. There was also a TV that functioned just fine, with a welcome screen detailing what services is available at the hotel.
The climate control panel was mounted on the wall and was simple for me to adjust; it maintain its temperature during my visit.
There was also a neat little tray with all the glassware, plus there were some tea, coffee, and kettle items on the minibar counter. It’s well stocked, everything is clean, and in the mornings I’d make myself a cup of tea before walking out the door. The in-room safe was located on the shelf and functioned perfectly; I kept a small amount of cash and my passport in there with no problems at all.
Most of it was fairly easy to understand, but there was an info card explaining the basics too.
The small but serviceable bathroom features a nice mirror with good lighting for morning get-ready time, a basin, and a vanity. The shower (with glass screen) had good water pressure and remained hot all the way through. There were wall mounted dispensers for body wash, shampoo and conditioner; I like these, as I find the tiny plastic bottles always runs dry midway through.
It all looked clean, and I could check my phone while dressing because there were plenty of mirrors reflecting the rest of the room.
Four Points by Sheraton Auckland Gym
During my visit, I went to the gym a few times as well. It’s located down one of the corridors off of the main part of the hotel. ).
In fact, the gym turned out to be better stocked than I’d anticipated. It had treadmills facing a window where I could watch TV (or, in this case, stare out of) during my run. Some machines lined one mirrored wall.
There was also a flat bench alongside some dumbbells. Facing the mirror were cross-trainers, and I noticed that there was a sanitiser dispenser next to the treadmill controls that everyone appeared to be using. On the floor was a plate-loaded resistance machine and a weights bench with a leg-curl attachment that I used for a brief workout.
The dumbbell rack was stacked neatly and full, a welcome sight since hotel gyms can often have missing weights.
I sat down at one bench that was facing the window overlooking the city and harbour, and took a break in-between sets. There was a low shelf with two Swiss balls on it, and plenty of fresh towels at the towel station. There was even a drinking fountain with a basin, and I saw a bowl of apples sitting out on the counter, a nice touch.
There was even a clock on the wall so I wouldn’t of have to keep checking my phone every other minute. In conclusion, I thought that the Four Points by Sheraton Auckland made for a very comfortable and practical place from which to explore the city. It’s well located, the rooms was just what I required (and nothing more), and the gym actually proved to be a good use of space.
If I’m back in Auckland, I would definitely stay there again. Do you have a favorite hotel in Auckland, or have you ever stayed at a Four Points property before?
