Breakfast at Hyatt Regency Hotel Yokohoma

Breakfast at Hyatt Regency Hotel Yokohoma

I had what was arguably one of my better breakfast experiences at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Yokohama’s Harbor Kitchen. The breakfast buffet here featured a varied mix of global and Japanese cuisine. I always like to be given a wide selection of choices and I got just that here.

Hyatt Regency Hotel Yokohoma’s Harbor Kitchen: Serving Breakfast, the Way It Should Be

French toast

The first thing I saw here was the French toast. It looked like they were preparing to turn it into a French toast casserole the way they cut it into cubes. If you’re feeling indulgent then you can slather your French toast with chocolate and/or maple syrup, raspberry jam, or good old whipped cream.

pancakes, grilled cheese sandwiches, and some croissants

Here are some Western breakfast staples such as pancakes, grilled cheese sandwiches, and some croissants. It’s quite interesting to see that people were mostly going for these.

Quiche Lorraines and crispy bacon

Other popular items in this breakfast buffet were the Quiche Lorraines and the crispy bacon. Actually seeing crispy bacon here was a little surprising considering how most hotels I’ve been to typically just offer the more processed Japanese bacon.

Japanese bacon

Speaking of Japanese bacon, it’s also here. If for some reason you prefer this more, then you’ll be glad to know that it’s here and at the time I took this picture there was still plenty of it.

sausages

Rounding out the processed meat section are the sausages. At the time I was there, Harbor Kitchen offered both regular and chicken sausages for their breakfast buffet. It’s good to have some these especially after a workout at the Hyatt Regency Yokohama’s gym.

order omelet

One thing I learned about Harbor Kitchen is that they don’t prepare their omelets (at least the French style ones) beforehand. Rather you’ll need to order these at your table.

steamed veggies

Here are some steamed veggies. I didn’t bother to check what was in these but I could vaguely see the outline of broccoli, carrots, and maybe cauliflower?

potato section

Now we’ve reached the potato section and we’re greeted with some interesting items. Starting from the right there’s baked potato with butter, followed by potato gratin, and then some bistro potatoes.

sesame dumplings

I wasn’t able to taste this so I can’t verify but these sesame dumplings might be made from red potatoes considering the other potato dishes in this section.

packets of butter, orange marmalade, and strawberry jams

From potatoes, I then headed to the breads and pastries section. What greeted me first were these packets of butter, orange marmalade, and strawberry as well as raspberry jams.

Aladdin Graphite Grill & Toaster ovens

Right next to the jams and butter are these Aladdin Graphite Grill & Toaster ovens. It’s apparently a popular toaster here in Japan and you can actually order one on Amazon (the Japanese version).

bear claws and pink frosted donuts

I think the breads and pastries section probably has the most diverse selection of food items in the whole buffet. At the time, it featured these bear claws and pink frosted donuts that looked really delicious.

Maple Pecan Danish and Cinnamon rolls

There’s also some Maple Pecan Danish and Cinnamon rolls if you’re into those. What I specifically like about this section (and the buffet in general) is that a lot of the portions are actually bite-sized which allows you to taste more without having to worry about wastage.

salad section

The salad section in Harbor Kitchen’s breakfast buffet is also nothing to scoff at. There’s a wide selection of dressings and ingredients here to help you mix a healthy or indulgent salad of your choice.

popular salad ingredients

Some of the popular salad ingredients that I saw in this section include purple cabbage, different varieties of lettuce, corn, cherry tomatoes, carrots, and cucumbers (just to name a few).

cheeses and some honey

Just next to the salad ingredients, you’ll find cheeses and some honey. These pair really well with the food items in the next section..

Deli meats

Of course I’m talking about Deli meats! They have Italian sausages, shoulder ham, prosciutto, and even smoked salmon.

fruit selection

Admittedly the fruit selection is rather limited. This section had pineapple, oranges, kiwis, lychee, and what seems to be mango (on the lower left).

scrambled eggs and steamed veggies

Here’s some scrambled eggs and what looks to be steamed veggies. I didn’t particularly care about these as I found there were more interesting items in other sections.

Pot-au-feu

I forgot what this was and I unfortunately wasn’t able to include its sign when I took this pic. It looks like Pot-au-feu or some other stew that has potatoes and carrots.

grilled salmon

Another item that seemed popular was the grilled salmon. I mean just look at how much of it is already gone. I actually wanted some on my plate but eventually decided against it.

Yodare-dori

In this section you’ll find Yodare-dori (Steamed Chicken with Spicy Sauce) and Char-siu Pork. I might be wrong though but these are typically not eaten for breakfast. Still, it’s nice that you have the option to get them here. Also, judging from what’s left of them they probably are popular among visitors here too.

healthy vegetable dishes

If you want tastier yet still healthy vegetable dishes then this section should be where you’re at. It has Simmered Hijiki seawood, Vegetables in Sesame Sauce, and Tataki Gobou or pounded burdock.

Natto

Of course no Japanese breakfast buffet is complete without some Natto. This is fermented so it might have a funky smell and it definitely has a sticky texture. Once you get over these though, you’ll find that it’s quite tasty especially if mixed with rice, egg, and soy sauce.

tamagoyaki and Inari sushi

I understand the inclusion of tamagoyaki but I’m not too sure why Inari sushi is here. The thing is that it’s not typically eaten for breakfast. That said, there are a lot of other food items here that also aren’t for your first meal in the morning.

condiments

In this section are some condiments that should go well with your rice. Nametake and mentaiko are great umami bombs while shirasu adds flavor and texture.

toppings for rice

Just below the mentaiko and nametake, you’ll find seasoned ginger and kelp, green leaves and shrimp, and five grains and hijiki. Much like the condiments above them, these are also great as toppings for rice.

chikuzenni

Again, I’m not sure what this is. It might have been chikuzenni or some other stew. As for what’s inside the small dutch oven, that’s actually curry.

yakisoba

I’d always thought yakisoba was mostly eaten at night or during lunch to go along with beer but it’s actually eaten for breakfast as well.

fish collar dish

I’m really stumped as to what this is. I mean, I’m pretty sure that it’s a fish collar dish. I’m just not sure as to what fish this might be and if it was steamed or grilled and then placed in a steamer. For what it’s worth it does look delicious and visitors who were having breakfast at the time also seemed to think so as well.

yogurt

You’ll find plenty of yogurt in the drink section. The two that got my attention were these Blueberry and Non-Fat Yogurt by Danone Bio.

coffee dispenser machine

There’s a coffee dispenser machine here as well if you want caffe latte, latte machiatto, an espresso, or even just plain hot water.

Ronnefeldt Tea

If coffee isn’t your thing then this section has various flavors of Ronnefeldt Tea. Some of these include Earl Grey, Peppermint, Red Berries, and Darjeeling.

juices section

The juices section here also has great variety.

Fruit Iced Tea, Grapefruit Juice, and Orange Juice

In this section, there’s Fruit Iced Tea, Grapefruit Juice, and Orange Juice. As I’m more of a coffee and tea person, I’m not sure how sweet these juices are.

dispensers for Kale Aojiru Green Juice and Apple Juice

Rounding out the juice section are these dispensers for Kale Aojiru Green Juice and Apple Juice.

milk

I was wondering where the milk was so I circled around and finally found it near the fruit section. Aside from regular fresh milk, there’s also low fat milk and if I’m not mistaken these are sourced locally.

Familia brand cereal samplers

Here we have the likely reason why the milk was here in this section. These are Familia brand cereal samplers for flavors such as Organic Muesli, Organic Swiss Muesli, Knusper Granola, and Organic Granola (just to name a few).

Hyatt Regency Hotel in Yokohama markets itself as a luxury hotel and it shows with its breakfast buffet. Harbor Kitchen did a lot of things right in its service. The most notable for me is probably how they portioned the servings to allow you to taste more of the dishes while also minimizing wastage. The variety is also great though there were some dishes that were out of place in a breakfast setting. Ambiance and atmosphere were also nice though not really that memorable. I quite liked my breakfast here and I’d say it’s worth checking out if you’ve booked a room here for a day or two.
