I gave the Gym at Hyatt Regency Yokohama a try and I was actually a little disappointed. No, the gym was not bad. It was actually quite clean and looked like it was well maintained. My disappointment stems from the fact that it felt like the hotel did the bare minimum to justify calling it a gym.
Gym at Hyatt Regency Yokohama: Just Enough to Burn Some Calories
I had initially thought of getting in my workout for the day so I checked if the gym was open. Turns out, it was and there was actually somebody there using one of the treadmills.

As you can see, the space here really isn’t that large and the view of the outside is just okay. That said, it just really lacks equipment. The three treadmills are going to be great since you’re probably going to end up walking a lot of the time when you’re here in Kamakura. Outside of those and the elliptical cross trainers though, you’re going to be out of luck.
These are commercial grade treadmills from Life Fitness’ Integrity Series and I think they’re quite comfortable to run/walk on. I managed to get a brisk jog for about 20-30 minutes on one of these before I decided to rest for a bit.
If you’d like to tone those muscles then you can opt to incorporate some weight exercises with these dumbbells here. These start at 2 kilograms and can go up to as much as 20 kilogram weights. I don’t personally use them when I’m travelling (I’m already lugging baggage you know?) but I still like that they’re here if I do decide to lift some. However, where are the Smith machines or maybe even a bar and some free weights?
If weight exercises aren’t your thing then the gym has 2 exercise balls and that’s basically it. There are the same number of yoga mats and a lone incline bench. Gym bros are definitely better off going to a local fitness center that has more equipment if they want to get a pump. But it’s also good to burn some calories here after having breakfast at Hyatt Regency Hotel Yokohama’s Harbor Kitchen.
I’ve read that elliptical cross trainers are actually better than treadmills because they’re a lot easier on the joints. Now I personally am not a big fan of these but I do understand how people might prefer them over treadmills. By the way, these are also by Life Fitness.
The Gym at the Hyatt Regency Yokohama is not that spacious (relative to other hotel gyms) and its equipment is rather limited. If you’re someone who can’t live without weight training then chances are, you won’t like this gym. Guests who just want to break a sweat and call it a day might find the elliptical and treadmill to just be enough.
