A relaxed little spot for breakfast, Number 8 Wire Restaurant & Bar in Rotorua is one of those places you can go to, sit back and relax without having to make a fuss. It’s got that neighbourhood feel about it, nothing trying to hard, just serving up the classics done really well, with a menu that will covers all of the usual breakfast suspects (plus some lunch option if you’ve slept in). From the minute we walked in I liked that it was easygoing.
They serves proper cooked breakfasts, good coffee and an atmosphere that let you take your time over a second cup without feeling rushed.
A Simple and Comfortable Breakfast
Number 8 Wire Restaurant & Bar
As we walked in, I took note of the dining room’s retro-casual feel. There was timber tables, bentwood chairs, and booth seating lining the walls of Number 8 Wire. It was not fancy, but it was clean and comfortabley.
It is the type of place you could of imagine having a quick weekday breakfast or a lazy weekend brunch. After finding us a table by the window, we opened up the menu and got down to business.
To start, we got some cappuccinos. They was served with a light dusting of froth on top and a bit of foam. The coffee itself was solid (not anything too special), but that’s all you really need when you’re waking up early and just need a good cup of coffee to get your day started.
At double the price, I’ve had worse.
Given how busy the place was, the food came out pretty promptly. For my part, I ordered one of the breakfast plates (bacon), poached eggs, a fritter on the side, all drizzled with hollandaise. The hollandaise was perfect tangy and rich, and the eggs was cooked right with runny yolks.
My dining companion ordered the risotto (surprising breakfast choice, I know) but it worked, well-seasoned, creamy. Everything were cooked properly and fresh; sounds basic but honestly that’s all you really want from a good breakfast spot.
On paper it was fairly simple, breakfast options includes things like eggs Benedict and farmhouse omelettes; lunch options was burgers and salads, if that’s what you’re after. I also flicked through their drinks menu which, while focused mostly on coffee, had a good range of other things available as well. It’s clear they aim to cover all bases for different parts of the day, which makes sense in a restaurant-bar setting.
Portions was generous. I didn’t feel like I’d overdone it, but I did leave full. Prices felt fair for Rotorua.
In the end, Number 8 Wire proved to be a solid option for breakfast in Rotorua, nothing flashy, no complaints, just a good meal in a nice setting. Sometimes on the road, that’s all you can really ask for. You just want something you know is going to be good before you set off exploring for the day.
This place is definitely worth remembering if you’re around the area and looking for a decent breakfast spot. Have you ever been to Rotorua? What’s your typical go-to breakfast spot when you travel?
