Rickshaw Café: Stopping for Some Ice Cream in Arashiyama, Kyoto
When I heard that there was a café called Rickshaw Café in Arashiyama, Kyoto (I also had fresh sushi here at Sushi Naritaya), I was quite intrigued. Was there a rickshaw inside the café?
I decided to grab a quick snack at the Rickshaw Café. It was a small wooden hut that had been painted completely black.
I saw that they served lunch and breakfast and there were different kinds of toast and hot dogs. The homemade jam toast and the spicy chili dog looked so good. Drinks like coffee, tea and juice would give you a refreshing burst of energy.
On the steps of the café was the statue of a child that was seated. It was really cute.
And of course the rickshaw café had a rickshaw parked right outside the doors.
When I went inside, I saw that the little knick-knacks included a row of miniature rickshaws. A map of the neighborhood was drawn on the wall.
I went to the counter and looked at the menu that was hung on the wall behind it.
The barista was busy taking orders. The café had free Wi-Fi.
You could put down your cups on the table and there were extra sugar sachets placed there.
An elegant little Christmas tree decorated one corner of the café.
The special hot chocolate came in matcha and white chocolate flavors.
They had something called a croffle, which looked like a croissant that had been turned into a waffle!
The thing that I was in the mood for, even though it was cold outside, was the ice cream. They had soft serve and various sundaes. I could see a matcha and brown sugar syrup sundae and affogato made with espresso or matcha. I really liked how they incorporated Japanese flavors into their ice cream.
Bottles of syrup had been set up on shelves behind the counter. And there were all sorts of souvenirs, like mugs and shoes.
Customers could take a look at the size of the cups before ordering their drinks. They came in large and small sizes, whether you ordered something hot or something cold. The croffles were displayed in the bakery case and I must say they looked absolutely mouthwatering!
When I sat down at one of the tables, there was a little note that said the café gave 100 Yen off on the second drink as long as you brought your first cup to the counter while ordering.
There were huge glass windows in the café so that customers could admire the view.
I went closer to the tree to take a photo.
The snowflake ornaments and glittery balls looked so pretty.
Someone had taken a lot of care while decorating the tree. There were cute baby cherub ornaments.
I had ordered a matcha soft serve in a cone and a hoji-cha salted caramel ice cream in a cup.
The staff served me with a napkin that had a sketch of a snowman and a ‘Thank You’ written on it.
The café was pretty empty so I could enjoy my ice cream in peace.
